Designer & creator of award winning art glass where you can design it, learn it, make it, and buy it!
Stafford Art Glass began in Culpeper, Virginia, as Stafford Glass in 1997 in a building that served as a grainery for the Windmore Farm. It was there that the furnaces, kilns, and benches were designed and built, setting the groundwork for what I do today in glass. The studio in Culpeper ran from 1997 until 2007 continuously.
In 2007 I had the opportunity to move to the New River Valley, which is where I grew up. This time period was not without bumps in the road, though, and what was going to be an eight week hiatus from orders for my gallery accounts turned into almost a decade away from glass. With an injured shoulder, I was unable to work, and the following year, the bottom fell out of the market. Two years after that, I was on my own teaching sculpture at Radford University. Wow. Through all of that, a burning desire to return to a creative practice in glass has seen me through the twists and turns.
The studio is as much a production space as it is a place that you can visit. The studio is home to a gallery where work is on display and there is the hotshop where you can watch many as many of the creations in the gallery are being made. There are a lot of original designs that you wont find anywhere else right here at the studio. Here I confer with clients on custom lighting for their home, special gifts, teaching classes, designing new work (much of it is now on the new site), and creating the design that have now become classic stand-by’s.
I invite you to visit us and our region. I am fortunate to call both the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny mountains my home. There is so much to see and do here. Just a couple of miles from the studio we have two covered bridged and a scenic waterfall called the Cascades. We have one of the oldest rivers in the world which we call The New River and you can rent a canoe, go tubing, or get skilled in blowing glass. Travel an hour down river and you can find whitewater rafting, and there are fishing tours as well. The Appalachian trail meanders through our County, and we have some of the prettiest vistas around. There are hotels, B&B’s and cabins in the County of Giles where the studio is located. Great restaurants and opportunities for recreation make our area fun to visit and great to live in. Oh, and the glass is pretty great, too! If you are planning a trip and would like my recommendations for making the most of it, feel free to reach out and I will send you an email providing you with links to recreations sites and other things to do while in our area. Don’t forget to stop by and see what is happening that is new at the studio. For right now, I have a ton of new work on the newly designed website. I hope you enjoy it!
